Dorothy Jean Johansen

Dorothy Jean Taylor Johansen, age 98, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2025, at the home of Bob and Shelley, her son and daughter-in-law. Dorothy was born in Patterson, New Jersey, on December 13, 1926. After graduating from Hackensack High School, she went on to receive her degree from Katherine Gibbs School. She married WWII Veteran, Harry Solberg Johansen, on December 7, 1951, and the Lord blessed them with two sons, Bob and Eric. As a young girl, Dorothy heard the gospel and received the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior through the ministry of First Baptist Church of Hackensack, New Jersey. Upon retirement, Harry and Dorothy moved to Greenville in 1989 to be near family and Dorothy joined Hampton Park Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Power Company at HP and she also enjoyed singing in the choir for a time. Through the years, Dorothy worked in various secretarial positions. She was also an active member of the following organizations: Magna Carta Dames, Colonial Dames, and Daughters of the American Revolution in which she served at least twice as regent in the over 50 years she was a member. Dorothy exhibited many interests in her lifetime! She was a skilled seamstress. She decorated her home with her beautiful needlework which included cross-stitch, embroidery, crewel, ceramics, and diamond art. She was an avid reader of many books. She also wrote over 200 blog entries on her site Reflections at Ninety Plus. She also took it upon herself to become proficient in technology. A lady who faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels lunches to Dorothy each week said, “I remember the day she invited me in to show some of her diamond paintings. She was the impetus for me buying a kit! The thing that shocked me the most was seeing the iPad and keyboard in front of a 94-year-old. Then she told me about her blog. I was so impressed. I know 60-year-olds that don’t know how to use anything in the technology arena.” Dorothy’s Grandma, Nan Holden, was an encouragement to Dorothy in her piano training by providing a piano for her to practice on in her home. Dorothy had many fond memories of lessons and piano performances and parties. Dorothy went on to become an accomplished organist as well. Dorothy is preceded in death by her dear husband, Harry. She is survived by her sons, Bob (Shelley) Johansen and Eric (Karen) Johansen, along with 5 grandchildren: Brian (Charis) Johansen, Kevin (Hailey) Johansen, Emily (Tim) Brokke, Christian (Anna) Johansen, and Kristen Johansen as well as twelve great grandchildren: Ami, Jeana, Martin, Rushton, Job, Mekenna, Daniel, Bryant, Bryden, Brycen, Jahiem and Brylin. The Johansen family would like to thank Agape Hospice for their loving care as well as caregiver, Amiyha Hogan. In addition, we thank Pastors Mike Cruice and James Harris for their attentive care of our family. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM with services following at 1:00 PM, at Hampton Park Baptist Church. Committal and burial (family) will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park at 3:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org) or to Hampton Park Baptist Church (www.hamptonpark.org/give). Revelation 14:13 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
