Gypsy Marie Denzine

Gypsy Marie (née DeSchriver) Denzine, 64, died on July 22, 2026 in Easley, SC in the presence of family after a two and half year battle with cancer. Born December 13, 1961 to parents Richard and Jean DeSchriver in Freeport, IL, the family moved to Stroudsburg, PA in 1969. Gypsy loved to travel the world, play tennis, and spend time with family and friends. The past several years were filled with trips abroad with her partner, Robert Curtis, and her best friend and accomplice, Rebecca Campbell, eating and drinking their way through Europe. Her final international excursion was a family trip to Ireland in May, 2026. Her enthusiasm, smile, and zest for life was infectious. “Gypsy” was a nickname, earned by her sense of adventure as a child, but became her legal name as a teenager and she carried that spirit throughout her life. Gypsy graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1980 where she played on the tennis team, ran track and field, and was the editor of the school newspaper. She loved returning to Stroudsburg every five years for class reunions with her high school friends. Gypsy earned a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from St. Cloud State University (MN) in 1984, a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Counseling from the University of Texas-El Paso in 1988, and a Doctoral degree in Education Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1996. She held several faculty and administrative positions at various universities throughout her 30+ year professional career. Notably, she was a Dean of the College of Education at both Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ and West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Her final professional position was at Virginia Commonwealth University where she served as the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Gypsy is survived by Dr. Robert Curtis, the love of her life for the last decade; her mother, Jean Marie DeSchriver; three siblings, Thomas DeSchriver, Meg DeSchriver Mason and her husband Jimmy Mason, and Timothy DeSchriver and his wife Kerry Ann Cortelyou. Gypsy is also survived by four nieces/nephews whom she loved dearly; Adam DeSchriver, Kelsey DeSchriver, Noelle Mason, and Brady Mason. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard L. DeSchriver. The family is thankful to Robert Curtis for his love, care, and support of Gypsy during the most challenging time of her life. Gypsy will be cremated and her ashes scattered around the globe. Gypsy’s life will be celebrated privately by family. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established at the University of Northern Colorado for an undergraduate student who is majoring in Special Education.
