Joseph Gregory Murphy

Joseph Gregory Murphy, 54, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina died Thursday, December 12, 2024. He was born in Belleville, NJ before moving to Ocean County, NJ and graduating from Toms River High School South. During his time in Ocean County, NJ he met many dear friends, and eventually met his wife, Rebecca (Becky) in 2001 before marrying in 2008. Joe worked in advertising sales for many years before eventually deciding to pursue his love of cooking. Joe attended the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, County Cork, Ireland in 2017 and returned to the United States with a renewed appreciation of cooking, food, and culinary skill sets. Eventually Joe and Becky decided to make a fresh start and moved to Greenville, South Carolina in 2019 after falling in love with the area. They settled in Travelers Rest, SC and were blessed to have wonderful neighbors who quickly became steadfast friends that they frequently socialized with. In their five years in South Carolina, Joe made many new friends and loved his “work family” at the Cooks Station, Greenville, SC. Joe and Becky were living out their dream life with their dogs, jobs they loved, and a wonderful network of friends, neighbors, and co-workers in South Carolina. Joe’s passion for cooking often led to memorable times at his backyard bar and kitchen, where he enjoyed gathering and cooking for friends, neighbors, and loved ones over football and baseball games. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Braves fan. Joe also was a passionate, organic gardener and tended his garden fastidiously and lovingly through harvest season. He was always quick to share his bounty, sending home vegetables with those who stopped by to visit on a regular basis. He enjoyed traveling and dining out with his wife and friends and trying new eateries and foods whenever they could. Joe also adored and cherished his beloved Beagle, Oliver (Ollie) and the newest addition to their family, his Dorkie (Dachshund/Yorkie mix), Rupert. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Jean and James Murphy; his brother, Tommy Murphy; his brother John Murphy, and his two Beagles, Dakota and Juneau. Joe leaves behind his loving wife and lifelong partner, Rebecca Murphy; his dogs, Ollie and Rupert; his sister, Jean Murphy; his brother, Jimmy Murphy; his Aunt Diane and Uncle Eddie Yesunas, Joe Yesunas and Amy Yesunas-Hansin, many aunts and uncles, cousins, and his nieces and nephews: Lauren (Murphy) Gilbert, Jimmy Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Sean Wong, Brandon Wong, and Samantha Dugan. Joe’s friends were like an extended family to him and he loved them all as such and leaves behind far too many people to name here. Joe’s sudden passing leaves a gap that will never be filled in so many people’s lives. He was a genuine and loving soul who wore his heart on his sleeve and had an Irish wit that never failed to bring a smile and laugh to those fortunate enough to find themselves in his company. His personality was larger than life. His dimpled smile and sense of humor charmed all who were honored to know him.
