Susan Boylston Hamlett

Susan Cater Boylston Hamlett, wife of William (Bill) Ansel Hamlett for 46 years, died Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at home with her husband by her side. Born April 4, 1943, in Fayetteville, NC, Susan was the daughter of the late Clifton Linwood and Ruth Cater Hyams Boylston. She was also predeceased by brothers Robert Edward and Clifton Lynwood Boylston. In addition to her husband Bill, Susan is survived by a brother David William Boylston of Wilmington, NC and several nieces and nephews. Susan grew up in Sumter SC and graduated from Edmunds High School in 1961. After completing nurse’s training at the Greenville Hospital School of Nursing, she began her 42-year career with the Greenville Hospital System in 1964. In 1968 Susan was promoted from Staff Nurse to Pediatrics Head Nurse, a position she held until 1986 when she took an educational leave to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating from the University of South Carolina – Spartanburg, May 1989. While at USC Spartanburg, she was inducted into The Gamma Beta Phi Society. Upon graduation, Susan began her work in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center (PHOC) as a Nurse Clinician. She soon realized this was the work she was meant to do, as she truly loved caring for and helping children fighting cancer and blood diseases. During her time at PHOC she became a National Board-Certified Clinician. In 1997, by a vote of her peers, Susan was named Children’s Hospital Caregiver of the Year. In 2005 Susan retired and began a new phase of life, volunteering, travel, spending time with family, or just spending time with her husband and dogs. Susan’s spiritual life, relationship with God, compassion and caring for others was central to her life. She went about this in very quiet and unassuming ways. Church life and worship were especially important all through her life, serving her church in many capacities for which she will always be remembered. The funeral service for Susan will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at St. George the Martyr Anglican Church, 427 Batesville Road, Simpsonville, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. George the Martyr Anglican Church, 427 Batesville Road, Simpsonville, SC, 29681.
